FAVORITE NEW MEXICO RIDES: |
JEMEZ SPRINGS / GILLMAN TUNNELS / VALLES CALDERA / LOS ALMOS
Jemez Springs is located just 45 minutes northwest of Albuquerque. The first leg offers long stretches of smooth blacktop to help "clean the exhaust pipes." Heading towards the village of Jemez Springs are slow winding roads thru red rock valleys. Take a detour to the Gillman Tunnels for something really special. Continue 40 miles towards the Valles Caldera National Preserve. From there, it's just another 25 miles of amazing riding through the mountains and forests until you reach Los Alamos (the city on a hill and home of the Manhattan Project).
TURQUOISE TRAIL / SANDIA CREST / MADRID
Take a trip along old Route 66 towards Tijeras. Then turn onto Rt 14 North, the Turquoise Trail, for a few miles. This is where you will begin your ascent. The next stretch is a steep climb with many switchbacks. The elevation change is approximately 5,000 feet!! When you reach the top, be prepared for stunning views of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley. After your descent, continue north on the Turquoise trail until you reach the small town of Madrid (made famous by the movie "Wild Hogs").
ENCHANTED CIRCLE / TAOS SKI VALLEY / CIMARRON
One of our all time favorite rides is around the famous Enchanted Circle. Begin in the town of Taos and head towards Arroyo Hondo, then thru Questa and on to Red River. This is a great place to take a break and grab a bite. Next stop is Eagle's Nest. From here you can head back to Taos or detour east to the town of Cimarron. Check out the historic (and haunted!) St. James Hotel, built by the Lambert family and related to one of chapter founding members, Scott Fliegel.
